DNA Results Recap

In spite of the fact that our group is still relatively small, we already achieved some success through the DNA testing.

bulletParticipants 17098 and 36340 had a perfect match on 25 markers. Both upgraded to 37 markers and again it showed a perfect match. Both decided to upgrade to 67 markers and their results were a 66/67 match - you can't get much closer than that!

Extensive research by Mrs. Judy S. Cardwell, related to participant 36340, indicated that her earliest known ancestor and the earliest known ancestor of participant 17098 were brothers. Actual documentation to prove this relationship hasn't been located. Their results thus far are backing up the theory that they are brothers.

These two lines haven't crossed paths since the mid-1700's.

bulletParticipants 13161 and 37171 suspected their respective earliest known ancestors were half-brothers. Both lines were independent of one another researched. Here too, actual documented proof hasn't been located. Even though participant 37171 only tested 12 markers, the results appear to back up the conventional research. Participants are of the HaploGroup (HG) I1b, which gives it a certain level of confidence as opposed to HG R1b . To be absolutely sure though, participant 37171 should upgrade to at least a 25-marker test. These two lines haven't crossed paths (that we know of) since the early 1800's.

The results of participants 47407 and N12354, whose ancestor is thought to be yet another half-brother, appear to confirm that the common ancestor of 13161, 37171 , 47407 and N12354 is Joseph Stanley, born about 1757.

All in this group have upgraded to 67 markers; we're awaiting the results of 2 upgrades. Through these upgrades we hope to determine which line(s) carry certain mutations.

Participant 72446 appears to belong to this group also; depending on the above results we may have to advice this participant to upgrade.

bulletOne of our participants was in search for his biological line, and it pleases us that he found a 37/37 match, confirming what used to be a "story in the family". Congrats!

bulletOf course, there have been some disappointments as well. We hope that these participants are able to overcome their disappointment and research with renewed energy.

bulletLast but not least: Several participants have not submitted their pedigree; we urge you to do so now. A row of numbers is not helping any one.

Our project is still "open", meaning any one can join without authorization from the project administrators. Many projects are closed, and their administrators decide whether you can join or not based on the information provided. We would like to keep our project open, but we will make it a closed project when the "unknowns" become too many.

Every participant has invested in this project, money as well as time. Every participant is interested in finding their roots - and it would be very nice indeed if the root has a name other than "unknown".

Most of those who haven't submitted their pedigree have been contacted by the project administrators several times. Some can no longer be reached due to an invalid e-mail address. All this "chasing" is just taking too much time and is unnecessary.

So please, now that you have participated, complete the process and become involved.

Haplogroups in green have been confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the individual's personal page. Haplogroups in blue FTDNA feels that comparative results are not clear enough to confirm the haplogroup.

If a – is in the HG field the haplogroup could not be determined. In both these cases FTDNA feels that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider ordering a SNP confirmation test.
